Plastic piping is used in both pressure as well as non-pressure applications. The pressure applications are in hot and cold water distribution and in water service. The non-pressure applications are in building drains, sewers, waste and in vents (DWV). Some of the other applications are in swimming pool piping, fire sprinklers, irrigation, floor heating, ice melting and chilled water systems.
What are the joint systems that are used for PVC? Above ground piping usually uses PVG solvent cement joints. Some underground piping also uses it. These use the pipe in a bell or socket and the systems are both pressure and non-pressure. Underground systems usually use gasketed joints with different standards. Transition joints are made with threads, grooved connectors, flanges, unions, gasket joints as well as other patented joints. The maximum temperatures for these pipes is 140 F. These pipes do not have a problem being exposed to the dun as they have UV inhibitors. So they can be used outdoors and can be painted with a water-based latex or acrylic paint which is chemically compatible with it.
Youll find the following markings on PVC pipes. You should have the manufacturers trademark and name. The size of the pipe should be mentioned. There should be a standard mentioned to which it conforms. There should be a mention of DWV if it is to be used for drainage. There should be a material designation code.It should carry an SDR or a schedule number. There should be a pressure rating. A laboratory mark or seal should be on in attesting suitability if it is to be used for drinking or potable water. The pipe should also carry a certifiers number.
PVC pipes can come in a variety of colors and does not have any color coding. It was all made in a dull gray earlier and there are still a lot of pipes in that color even today. The pipes used in irrigation however, are usually white. Piping for water too is usually white today though there are a few blue ones by certain companies that are making an appearance. Sewer pipes are turning green and CWV pipes are available in white, buff or cream as well.
